GERD or Gastro-Oesophageal Reflux Disease is a condition in which the valve between the stomach and oesophagus becomes weak and stays open for an extended period of time, allowing stomach acid to flow back into the oesophagus. However, GERD may be diagnosed if it occurs twice a week or does not improve with antacids. Studies show that GERD is prevalent in Asian countries around 5%, and in western countries around 10% to 20%.
An Ayurvedic definition of GERD/Acid reflux is Urdhwaga Amlapitta, which is a very common disease caused by Vidagdha Pitta with symptoms that include sour belching and burning sensation in the throat and chest as well as indigestion. The Ayurvedic text defines Amlapitta as a GI disorder closely related to Gastritis that can even lead to ulcerative conditions. An increase in acidic content in stomach fluids may cause acid reflux due to an aggravated pitta dosha.
Busy stressful lifestyle – Use of alcohol or cigarettes.
Irregular eating habits (Eating sour, contaminated foods and foods causing burning sensation).
Hiatus hernia (very common in people older than 50 years).
Abuse of some analgesic drugs.

Chest pain
